Why the Business Experience Using Social Media is Like Trying Sushi

The first several times I attempted sushi, I tried if off the Chinese buffet because it happened to be there and so many people were talking about how great sushi was. Frankly, I did not get it.

This is really not unlike my first experiences using Twitter. I sent a couple of tweets into the world with absolutely no response. I set up my Twitter account because it was there, it was free and everyone was talking about it. I was not sure what they meant by micro-blogging. Most of what I was reading were tweets about pointless things and I certainly did not see any relevance to using Twitter in marketing.

But back to the sushi story…

Sushi from the buffet was bland, at best, gummy and some of it was just plain tasteless. I wonder how many thousands of people have been turned off from eating sushi forever because their first experience was just like mine, from a Chinese buffet, prepared by someone who did not really know the art of sushi.

Finally I promised to treat a friend to dinner for her birthday and let her pick any where she wanted to go. She picked a sushi restaurant that was her new favorite place to eat and I could not deny her request. I was fairly well convinced from my previous buffet sushi experiences, however, that I was not really going to like this.

I began to feel more open-minded about the sushi when I noticed how different the place looked. The atmosphere, the tableware, the ingredients and being able to watch the chef rolling elevated my opinion before my first bite. But then there was the menu. I was totally confused.

The menu had variety, complexity and used terms I had never heard of, like tempura. I needed some direction. My friend jumped in and shared with me the things she liked, explained the components and ordered a sampling for me to try. I took my first bite of real sushi and I was converted forever.Image

Since that time I have become a sushi advocate, sharing my sushi story and trying to convert people. I tell them that prior to experiencing sushi done right – by a real expert, in the proper setting using the right ingredients – that I had a true disdain for it. “But now it is my absolute favorite thing to go out and eat,” I proclaim.

Similarly, today I speak to professionals about social media in the strategic marketing and brand context. Just like how the right atmosphere, tableware, quality ingredients, chef and guidance from a friend made the difference with sushi… so too will a business experience with social media be completely elevated when integrated with their brand “atmosphere”, using quality content and the right tools guided by strategic insight from expert voices.

Recently I have had the opportunity to talk to business owners and marketers about social media in a completely different context than just why they should use Twitter or Facebook and how it is relevant to their marketing efforts:

2013: The Year of Strategic Social Media

In 2008-2010 few businesses understood how to leverage social media for business and  most were debating the relevance. In 2011-2012 many businesses accepted social media as a legitimate avenue for marketing, but viewed it as an island of its own.

I predict 2013 will mark the year that businesses really seek to integrate social media into their overall strategy and begin to view social media and media overall in the context of “paid, earned and owned.” I predict 2013 will also see a resurgence of marketing activity with a much more strategic, rather than purely tactical, focus and that marketers will really begin to grasp and leverage Content Marketing as part of their overall plan.

Jeff Bullas is one of my favorite authorities on all of these subjects and leads the way in 2013 in helping business owners and marketers take their use of social media to the next level.

MEETUP RECAP: Increase Your Business and Influence Using Cool Social Media Tools with Bookmarklets

This week I had the pleasure of  ”meeting up” with and presenting to the Iowa Entrepreneurs Coalition Meetup group again! Check out the group, they would love to have you join.

The presentation was: Increase Your Business & Influence with Cool Social Media Tools (click to see details of who attended and the comments about the presentation).

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I promised the group that I would post the web site links and a summary of each tool we covered — plus a few bonus extras! My first presentation, of what I hope to make a series of presentations, on “cool social media tools” focused on the platforms and tools that also have buttons (called bookmarklets) that can easily be “dragged” and dropped onto your browser bar (see example of my tool bar below with bookmarklets):

When bookmarklets are added to your browser bar they make finding, collecting, organizing, saving and sharing articles and content you find on the Web to your social networks and blogs much easier! When you create an account on any of these following platforms, look for the accompanying bookmarklets under the about, extras, resources or tools sections on the platform websites. But many sites will also prompt you to add the bookmarklet to your browser at the time you set up the account.

Visibli Custom Engagement Bar and Analytics with Each Shared Link.

When you share articles on Twitter and Facebook using Visibli, anyone who clicks on the article link will see your personal brand profile picture and your social media links personalized above the article with a comment “shared by.” Visibli will help you attract more viewers to your website and social pages. The Engagement Bar also increases your reader retention by 12%.

Visibli.com

Scoop.it! : Share ideas that matter. Easily curate engaging magazines. Effectively feed your web presence.

Scoop.it identifies and collects great content that matches your audiences interests based on a profile of topics you create. The tool also allows to “connect with a community of curators with similar interests” and allows you to be discovered and followed as a content curator as well. Articles collected can be easily edited and published to catch your followers attention. Scoop.it can become, as they say, the “hub that feeds your social media.”

Storify: Find the best of social media…

“Storify lets you curate social networks to build social stories, bringing together media scattered across the Web into a coherent narrative. We are building the story layer above social networks, to amplify the voices that matter and create a new media format that is interactive, dynamic and social.”

In addition to finding the best “stories” on the web collected from multiple sources, you can create your own story which makes Storify a great postmortem for your event. Collect the tweets, comments, pictures, blog posts and more in one place that tells the story of your event. Your final curated story can then be embedded anywhere, such as on a website or blog and the whole story can be shared to go viral on the Web.

PinterestPinterest is an online pinboard. Organize and share things you love.

A content sharing service that allows members to “pin” images, videos and other objects to their pinboard.

Pinterest also includes standard social networking features – so technically it is considered a social network itself- actually now the third most popular network after Facebook and Twitter.

Pinterest does include a bookmarklet called “Pin It” which can be added to the browser bar to make “pinning” easy from any website.

Pinwords : Instantly add beautiful text to your images.

A tool to use in conjunction with Pinterest is Pinwords which allows you to add text your photos or create graphic elements out of text so that you can pin “words” (such as your favorite expressions or quotes) onto your Pinterest Boards.

SpringpadSmart notebooks that help you share & discover with the people you trust.

Springpad explains further that you can “Organize and save the things that matter to you and access them from anywhere.” I am a huge fan of the project management software called Basecamp. But I am currently collecting content and organizing materials that I am going to share for a class, “Optimizing Social Media for Business,” all on Springpad. I will have to report back about how it worked for this project.

Springpad is similar to Pinterest in that you create “notebooks” that are similar to the boards you create on Pinterest. But instead of just pinning photos and videos with comments and links, Springpad notebooks are much more robust. When you add a “spring” to a notebook, it can be a recipe, a to-do list, a book or more. There is a drop-down list of pre-set categories for “springs” that are pre-formatted — such as a list.

While Springpad lets you make notebooks and you can include a list in a notebook, Listly is all about lists. We did not get around to demonstrating this tool, but it is worth checking out in more detail. If you love to make lists, then you might just love Listly. The advantage in the end is that it allows you to create an embed code so you can embed your list on a blog or share your list link easily.

Listly : Lists made easy + social + fun!

Listly invites you to get your social curation mojo on! Boasting that 1000+ blogs have embedded Listly lists on their website, Listly says it you can “curate the Web’s best lists on Listly or right on your own site.”

In my Business Communication course, for oral presentations, I always tell my students that “lists” get people’s attention. Think about David Letterman’s Top Ten List. Our brains love organized content and we perk up when we see or hear something about lists.

According to Listly, here is what Lists do for your business: “Lists = Ranking. List Posts = Traffic. We help bloggers & brands curate, crowdsource, and engage readers via live embedded list content inside blog posts.”

QuoraQuora connects you to everything you want to know about. Quora aims to be the easiest place to write new content and share content from the web.

The main appeal with Quora is getting great answers to your questions. The answers come from the Quora community many of which have been identified as providing expert answers in their fields. Their contributions are even ranked over time based on their popularity and the answers the have provided on different subjects.

In terms of content creation, Quora is an excellent source for writing blog posts based on “crowdsourced” answers. Here is an example of a “crowdsourced” article via Business2Community.com: The Future of Social Media: 50+ Experts Share Their 2013 Predictions . Quora would be an excellent source for collecting predictions from thought-leaders in the area of social media and marketing.

“Often the things you wonder about can be asked as a question. On Quora, questions are the primary way we elicit new information from people’s minds onto the web. Each question page aims to become the best resource for anyone with that same question. In many cases, your question will already have been asked and answered by people with first-hand experience.” (Quora)

Hootsuite: Social Media Management Dashboard.

Hootsuite allows you to publish, monitor and measure across multiple social media networks, securely. You can also have multiple managers for group management and manage multiple profiles on one dashboard.

Twitter, in particular, makes a lot more sense and can be more powerful for business when using a dashboard such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck.com.  While often you will work directly from the Hootsuite dashboard, it does have a browser bookmarklet available as well.

WordPress : Web software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog. We like to say that WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.

My blogs (short for web log) including this one are created using WordPress. WordPress has added a bookmarklet tool “Press This” that allows me to share content directly from the Web to my blog on WordPress by adding the title of the article and a link as a post and then at the same time allowing me to write an introduction or comment on the article I am sharing on the blog.

Many of the tools I use and covered in my presentation, PLUS many more, are listed and described here by You Brand Inc: THE ULTIMATE LIST OF CONTENT CURATION TOOLS AND PLATFORMS

Three Important Benefits of Digital Public Relations (Infographic)

Often a brand’s blog is designed to be the “hub” for which all social media content can be pushed out from. However, working with a non-profit that currently does not have a blog, I began to consider how their press releases could serve a similar purpose.

With a calendar full of monthly fundraisers and community involvement, press releases are constantly being written leading up to and following the non-profit’s scheduled events. These press releases are approved by the director and with a blessing on the content they can then be re-purposed by volunteer staff and supporters in a variety of ways:

  • Sent to traditional media outlets for editorial use
  • Submitted online through a variety of paid and free platforms
  • Placed in the “news and events” section of a website
  • Posted with photos or video to a blog
  • Used in newsletters and email correspondence to stakeholders
  • Shared on various social media platforms

This Infographic by Social Media Today affirmed the strategy of writing and using press releases as an integral part of a digital marketing communications plan.

Facebook Integrates With Dropbox To Power File-Sharing Within Facebook Groups

Reblogged from TechCrunch:

Facebook announced today a new integration with personal file storage company Dropbox. Now, people can share files to Facebook Groups using Dropbox's cloud-based storage system.

Dropbox's Chris Varenhorst writes in a blog post announcing the integration:

"Today we’re psyched to announce that you can share stuff from Dropbox right inside Facebook Groups! Now you can share notes with your study group, add the latest game schedule to your basketball team’s group, or post a birthday video to your family’s group at lightning speed from wherever you are — just as long as you have them saved in Dropbox.

Read more… 305 more words

While the article notes that you can still continue to share files just as you always have in Facebook groups, if you do have files in Dropbox or it is a platform you already are familiar with, you can now share files straight from Dropbox into your Facebook groups. If you are not familiar with Dropbox , here is their description: "Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring your photos, docs, and videos anywhere and share them easily. Never email yourself a file again!" Dropbox always you to access your files on Dropbox, by storing your files "in the Cloud." In a very cute and clever Ebook entitled "20 Things I learned About Browsers and the Web", "the Cloud" (or as the book has subtitled it "Why It's Okay for a Truck to Crush Your Laptop") is explained as the thousands of computers that store data which can be accessed via the internet instead of on your own personal computer -- which can be hit by a truck. Instead of storing documents or installing software, much is now called "software-as-a-service" and you are allowed access to using the software through the internet by being a subscriber. Many documents are now migrating to the cloud are being stored there until you are ready to login and access them. Dropbox is one service that you access via the internet and which your documents are stored in a far-away computer accessed when you need it through the internet and shared over the internet -- including people in Facebook groups. Has anyone started sharing documents in Facebook groups via Dropbox? What has your experience been with this ability to share directly from Dropbox to Facebook?

Goodbye Punch Card, Hello SpotOn: Digital Loyalty Software for Local Merchants

I had the great pleasure of meeting with Dan Morphew, the Regional Director of Midwest Operations for SpotOn Inc, last week about the company’s software platform that is revolutionizing and modernizing loyalty programs.

Serving the same purpose as a punch card in rewarding loyal customers, SpotOn goes way beyond the traditional paper punch card by allowing merchants to build an information database that includes the buying behavior of their customers. Armed with customer intelligence, merchants can quickly and easily create Groupon-like special promotions targeted at particular customers such as those who have not been in the store for a while or at new customers to develop those relationships.

Spoton allows merchants to use the platform for free for the first 30 days to give them an opportunity to introduce the program to their customers and to become acquainted with the platform. After that the merchant subscribes to the platform for a very affordable monthly rate. Under no contract obligation, SpotOn can be cancelled at any time.

After learning about the company and testing out the SpotOn software, I was impressed. The product is very smart and has incredible marketing and promotion potential and the start-up company has really thought through and executed all aspects of their own marketing flawlessly.

SpotOn Launches Digital Loyalty Network for Local Merchants and Consumers

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Aug. 17, 2012 — SpotOn (www.spoton.com) today announced the launch of its new digital loyalty network for local merchants and consumers. SpotOn installs tablets in places like cafes and salons so consumers can easily check-in using a smartphone or card to earn rewards and incentives. SpotOn’s founders, who have deep experience building and selling services to help small businesses, have provided an initial$5 million in funding.

Since starting its tablet-based program in April of this year, SpotOn has attracted over 1,500 merchants and is currently signing-up more than 500 new businesses a month.

“Local businesses are waking up to the fact that deepening their relationships with existing customers is more cost-effective than recruiting new ones through group buying deals, ads or paper coupons,” said Zach Hyman, co-CEO of SpotOn. “Yet many business owners don’t have the time or know-how when it comes to connecting with their customers using social, mobile and email marketing.  Our tablet-based approach provides at-a-glance customer profiles making it really easy to run targeted campaigns.”

About SpotOn, Inc

One Card. Endless Perks.

SpotOn is a consumer-facing loyalty platform and a merchant-facing marketing machine. For consumers, SpotOn eliminates the need to carry multiple punch cards with a seamless digital check-in to access rewards and perks. Using SpotOn’s tablet-based dashboard, merchants now have an entirely new and simple way to connect with their customers using social, mobile and email marketing. With one click, merchants can learn more about their customers by viewing typical spend and campaign redemption activity.

Five Things to Take Away From This Year’s SXSW

Via Scoop.itAmplified Events

There’s always something newer than the last new thing. Big brands are desperate for social media glory.
Some tech gimmicks can seem heartless.
Old media wants to play, too. “Popularity at SXSW does not guarantee success. Others have pointed this out. Last year’s phenomenon, GroupMe, a group text messaging service, was acquired by Skype. The company let people text message groups of their friends at the same time. Yet that doesn’t mean people continue to use it. My GroupMe groups from last year were completely dormant this year. Punctuating the point, Facebook closed down location-sharing service Gowalla this week, which it acquired last year. SXSW is a social media petri dish for apps, but once they leave the dish and hit the oxygen of the real world, they can wither.”

that’s what I call the danger of  the hype. It takes time to build a strong engaged community. Making you believe you can create one in 3 days in Austin could provoke the shooting star effect.

The Ultimate SXSW infographic: The most popular influencers, parties, brand campaigns and more

To measure the awesomeness that is SXSW, Tracx, a social media management system, created an infographic of the SXSW aftermath, which quantifies the good time attendees had at the event. Which speakers/keynotes were most talked about? Which parties were most popular? Which influencers/thought leaders tweeted/posted the most? Which brands and campaigns generated the most buzz?

Sounds pretty accurate. the “sad”  part for me?

panels mentioned : 79, 635 times

parties : 279, 708 times

SxSW is famous and unique because you can’t clearly define it as a classical conference. But a balance has to be (re)found, at least.
